Week of 2-24-20

Sneak Peek of the Week...

Literacy
This week students will finish their novels from the books Boy in the Girl's Bathroom and
the Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Students will take a quiz on Friday to review
important details on the text they were assigned.

In writing we will begin a new unit on informational writing. Students will select a topic that
they enjoyed learning about from the history of Chicago, and conduct more research on that
topic. Students will then use this research to create an informational book to teach others about
what they have learned. This week students choose the top 3 topics that interest them and
gather information notes at school and home.

Math
This week we will continue to learn how to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike
denominators. Students will also have the opportunity to take home their student math journals
on Fridays to finish any incomplete math journal pages from the week. Please make sure that
they do not work past page 180.

Science
We will be starting a new Foss unit in Science called "Soil, Rocks, and Landforms.
Students will set up a new science notebook to help prepare them for new science investigations
this week. They will observe four different types of soils and rocks, and use evidence from their
investigation to explain the effects of physical and chemical weathering.

they will jot down a short summary of each chapter, gather questions about the characters,
and make predictions using clues or schema to help.

We will continue with Unit 5, learning how to add fractions with like and unlike denominators,
and find equivalent fractions with a denominator of 10 or 100 for each one.

Social Studies
This will be the last week of Social Studies before we begin our next unit of science this
quarter. Students will finish putting together their ABC books using their finished laminated
"wordle" covers. We will also take a short quiz on "I survived the Great Chicago Fire" this week
to assess students' knowledge of setting and character development.

For your information FYI:
This week is Random Act of Kindness Week. Our class will participate in the Random
Act of Kindness Challenge. Students will engage in random activities that mark actions
of kind gestures at school. Also, students who show acts of kindness throughout the
school day may be rewarded with a "caught being kind" coupon. This coupon will allow
students to get their picture taken and posted. The picture and note will be sent home as well
as displayed on the counseling bulletin board.
